The DEISA Consortium is operating the Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications. DEISA aims at delivering a turnkey opera­tional solution for a future persistent European HPC eco­system, as suggested by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). The ecosystem will inte­grate national supercomputer centres (Tier-1), and leadership-class European HPC centres (Tier-0), as planned by the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE).

By joining DEISA, CEA will become an integrated part of the European HPC infrastructure, and DEISA is enhancing the European HPC ecosystem by completing their members with a future Tier-0 HPC centre. This partnership is strengthening the efforts and synergies of DEISA and CEA in their engagements for the advancement of computational sciences in a European HPC infra­structure, and will tighten the integration of the HPC user communities at European level.

Collaborations are envisaged at various levels. These will address both technical issues as well as the HPC support for scientific communities and potentially pilot industry projects.

Benefits and synergies are expected through the usage of the DEISA service structures. The collaboration is especially valued since CEA is a PRACE Principal Partner and candidate to hosting one of the future leadership class Tier-0 supercomputer systems in a European HPC ecosystem.

CEA Supercomputing Complex

CEA (Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique) is a French government-funded technological research organisation. A prominent player in the European Research Area, it is involved in setting up collaborative projects with many partners around the world. CEA is shareholder of GENCI (Grand Equipement National de Calcul Intensif) – the French national High-Performance Computing organization. GENCI represents France as a Principal Partner within the European PRACE project and CEA Supercomputing Complex at Bruyères-le-Châtel is a Tier0 candidate site for PRACE future Petaflops supercomputers in 2010.

The CEA/DAM-Ile de France (CEA/DIF) site at Bruyères-le-Chatel hosts the CEA Supercomputing Complex. It includes the Centre de Calcul Recherche et Technologie (CCRT) with the mission to enable large-scale numerical simulations for its scientific and industrial partners, and to create synergies among users, researchers and service and technology providers in the area of HPC.

DEISA

In EU FP7, the DEISA Consortium continues to support and further develop the distributed high performance computing infrastructure and its services through the DEISA2 project funded for three years as of May 2008. Activities and services relevant for Applications Enabling, Operation, and Technologies are continued and further enhanced, as these are indispensable for the effective support of computational sciences in the HPC area.

In addition to the eleven DEISA members from seven countries, BSC/Spain, INECA/Italy, CSC/Finland, ECMWF/UK, EPCC/UK, FZJ/Germany, HLRS/Germany, IDRIS/France, LRZ/Germany, RZG/Germany and SARA/The Netherlands, the four centres CEA/France, CSCS/Switzerland, KTH/Sweden and JSCC/Russia join the DEISA2 project as associated partners.
