DEISA PRACE Symposium 2010 in Barcelona: Exciting Computational Science and Future HPC Technologies

PDF download

March 5, 2010 - DEISA, the Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications, and PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe organise a second major European event in High Performance Computing: the DEISA PRACE Symposium 2010. This symposium will take place from May 10 to May 12 in Barcelona, Spain. It will be hosted by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) at the famous Casa Milà, also known as “La Pedrera”(a modernist building designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí).

The theme of this unique symposium is “Advancements in PetaFlop-Computing”. The symposium covers both European and international developments. The event is of major interest to a broad audience: computational scientists, HPC technology experts, government representatives, vendors, and industry partners.

Keynote speakers across the world will outline the strategic perspectives of High Performance Computing (HPC). During the first day they include Montserrat Torné (Director General for International Cooperation and Institutional Relations of the Spanish Ministry), Konstantinos Glinos (European Commission); José Muñoz (National Science Foundation, US), Akira Ukawa (University of Tsukuba, Japan) and Thomas Zacharia (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, US).

The second day focuses on challenges in computational science. Featured speakers include: Laurent Villard (EPFL, Switzerland), Wolfgang Hillebrandt, (MPI for Astrophysics, Germany) Ivo Gut (National Genome Institute,Spain) and Thomas Schulthess, (ETHZ & CSCS, Switzerland).

Speakers from PRACE will address future technologies including novel programming paradigms, tools, Tier-0 systems access, and emerging technologies.

DEISA and PRACE will provide updates on Extreme Computing in Europe, HPC architectures, applications, and training. In three Extreme Computing sessions, challenging computational science projects from all over Europe will be presented, covering essential scientific areas.

Registration for the DEISA PRACE Symposium is open at the DEISA and the PRACE websites, free of charge.

About DEISA

In EU FP7, the DEISA Consortium continues to support and further develop the distributed high performance computing infrastructure and its services through the DEISA2 project funded for three more years as of May 2008. Activities and services relevant for Applications Enabling, Operation, and Technologies are continued and further enhanced, as these are indispensable for the effective support of computational sciences in the HPC area.

About PRACE

The Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) prepares the creation of a persistent pan-European HPC service, consisting of several tier-0 centres providing European researchers with access to capability computers and forming the top level of the European HPC ecosystem. The PRACE project receives funding from the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n° RI-211528.

About BSC

The BSC-CNS (Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación) is the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain and was officially constituted in April 2005. BSC-CNS manages MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, located at the Torre Girona chapel. The mission of BSC-CNS is to investigate, develop and manage information technology in order to facilitate scientific progress. With this aim, special dedication has been taken to areas such as Computational Sciences, Life Sciences , Earth Sciences and Computer Applications in Sciences and Engineering.
