Europe's DEISA and GridAustralia demonstrating interoperation with distributed supercomputing for HIV drug simulations

DEISA, the Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications, and GridAustralia, joined by Monash University, have demonstrated interoperation of their HPC infrastructures with distributed simulations in both continents on the effectiveness of drugs on mutants of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus HIV. DEISA Extreme Computing Initiative awards 2008

Europe’s HPC infrastructure DEISA has announced that 45 projects were awarded a total of about 30 million hours of computing time on Europe’s most powerful supercomputers as part of the DEISA Extreme Computing Initiative.

DEISA launched the DEISA Extreme Computing Initiative (DECI) in early 2005. “DECI was created and supported as the right instrument to enhance DEISA’s impact on Europe’s competitiveness in science and technology”, explains Victor Alessandrini from CNRS-IDRIS, coordinator of DEISA. Géant2 helps drive high speed supercomputer projects

The speed of collaborative research using Europe’s network of supercomputers will be advanced by a major upgrade. The Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications (DEISA), has increased connectivity speeds ten-fold to 10 Gbit/s, through the GÉANT2 pan-European research and education network, managed by international research and education network provider DANTE.

DEISA provides leading scientific researchers with access to a European cluster of state-of-the-art High Performance Computing (HPC) resources. This upgrade will allow researchers to harness the combined processing power of DEISA’s 200 teraflops of supercomputing infrastructure. GÉANT2 and its partner National Research and Education Networks currently connect seven DEISA sites - BSC (Spain), IDRIS (France), FZJ, HLRS, LRZ, RZG (all Germany) and SARA (The Netherlands) via dedicated 10 Gbit/s wavelengths; CINECA (Italy), CSC, the Finnish IT center for science (Finland), EPCC (UK) and ECMWF (UK) are scheduled for connection by mid-2007.

American and European supercomputing infrastructures linked through a common wide-area global file system

TeraGrid (www.teragrid.org), the US supercomputing cyber­infrastructure, and DEISA (www.deisa.eu), the corresponding European supercomputing grid infrastructure, have been linked, for the purposes of a technology demonstration, by a common, scalable, wide-area global file system spanning two continents. The bridging of communities in the old and the new world were showcased during the Supercomputing Conference SC05 at Seattle. It was shown that any scientist, accessing TeraGrid from any of the participating sites in the US, or accessing DEISA from any of the DEISA sites in France, Germany or Italy, can directly and transparently create or access collaborative data stored in the now linked grid-wide global file systems of TeraGrid and DEISA with one common file address space.
